Actions for the improvement of the qualitative and quantitative situation and the adaptation to the climate change of the coastal groundwater system “Larissos” of the catchment area “Peiros-Vergas-Pinios (EL02)”, Northern Peloponnese Water Department
Purpose
-
Implementation of the climate change mitigation principles by monitoring the impacts of overexploitation of water resources
-
Implementation of the principles of sustainable development and environmental protection through the delimitation of the brackish zone of coastal aquifers
-
Establishment of a network for continuous monitoring of the quantitative and chemical status of aquifers and the results of the pilot application of artificial recharge
-
Promote awareness and improve knowledge on the protection and management of groundwater resources facing problems of salinization
Expected
Results
-
Delimitation of the brackish zone of the Underground Water System (UWS) of Larisos river, determination of protection zones, and proposals for management measures to achieve a minimum water level and pumping rate of the existing water intake works into the determined protection zones to adverse salinity.
-
Proposals to improve the poor qualitative and quantitative situation of the UWS of Larisos river and adaptation to the climate change by using data from the elaborated hydrogeological survey and the pilot application of groundwater artificial enrichment.
-
Fulfillment of measures Μ02Β0601 and Μ02Σ0801 of the respective EL02 Watershed Management Plan, through the utilization of the project deliverables by the Directorate of Waters of Western Greece

Research Area
The study area of the present project is the Underground Water System (UWS) “Larissos” of the catchment area of Peiros-Vergas-Pinios (EL02), Northern Peloponnese Water Department. The granular groundwater system of “Larissos”, covering an area of 185 km2, is coastal, extends within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Western Achaia…
